Choosing the Best Digestive Enzymes for Gut Health & Wellness

Ready to get your digestion back on track? Good for you! Digestive enzymes are a great way to do just that.

We recently published an article about the benefits of digestive enzymes, probiotics, and prebiotics, and it turns out there's more than meets the eye when considering which ones could work best for your body.

When trying to decide between formulas, remember this checklist: Are you over 20 years old (the further in life we get, often the greater need)? What type of food have been eating lately? Any external factors impacting how well our stomachs process foods like stress or anxiety? Last but not least - what does your doctor think is right for YOU specifically!?

With these questions guiding us along our journey into enzyme enlightenment (cue: dreamy harp music), finding THE ONE will soon be a reality!

HOW TO CHOOSE THE BEST DIGESTIVE ENZYMES FOR YOU
DIGESTIVE ENZYMES 101

When it comes to searching for digestive enzyme supplements, you're most likely to come across one of two types of formulas.

First, you'll find formulas that contain a blend of digestive enzymes and nothing else. Generally speaking, these straightforward types of formulas are ideal for people that have mild or occasional digestive troubles, or for people that want a simple pre-meal product that can prevent gut issues from starting.

The other formulas you'll find are the ones that pair digestive enzymes with probiotics, prebiotics, turmeric, or other natural ingredients that aid digestion. These advanced enzyme formulas (like our Digestive Enzymes with Prebiotics and Probiotics) are great for people that experience more challenging digestive issues on a frequent basis.

Based on those descriptions, you might already be deciding which of the two types of enzyme formulas you need, but don't go with your gut just yet. Instead, keep these two options in mind while we go over a few key factors to consider to help you make the best choice for your tummy.

FACTOR #1: ARE YOU OVER THE AGE OF 20?

Don’t worry. We’re not checking IDs around here! It just so happens that your age plays a vital role in how well your digestive system functions.

By age 20, your body’s ability to produce natural enzymes will drop by 25% and will continue to decrease by as much as 35% when you reach your 40s. So, depending on your age, you’ll either need a simple everyday supplement to compensate for the loss of enzymes or something with more punch if you’ve had a lot more “21st birthdays.”

FACTOR #2: WHAT’S IN YOUR DIET?

Whether you’re a happy vegan, a spicy food fanatic, or just a meat and potatoes kinda person, your dietary choices play a big part in how well your system functions.

Depending on your dietary choices, you might adore foods (and even beverages) that your gut can’t exactly digest with ease. We’re talking dairy, fried food, spicy food, meat, raw veggies, and even alcohol.

If you’re at the point where you’re avoiding certain foods to keep your gut from going crazy, an advanced digestive supplement is the way to go.

FACTOR #3: FEELING STRESSED?

Let's be real. Sometimes, our day-to-day lives can get frustrating, worrisome, and extremely stressful. Problem is, the more we stress, the worse we digest.

Whether it's parenting woes, busy work schedules, relationship drama, or mile-long to-do lists, our gut has a hard time stomaching stress. So much so, that it can cause stomach discomfort, decreased nutrient absorption, poor sleep, and more fatigue. Geez!

With that in mind, if these are stressful times for you, we recommend taking an advanced digestive blend to keep your gut at peace. Or, you can take a simple digestive enzyme supplement with our great-tasting probiotic chewables to support your gut-brain connection, which you can learn more about here.

FACTOR #4: WHAT DOES YOUR DOCTOR THINK?

We certainly know a thing or two about digestive health, but your doctor knows the most about your digestive health.

If you're ever unsure as to what's best for your gut based on your age, dietary needs, health history, or any of the factors we mentioned above, be sure to ask your doctor what they would recommend for you.

Plus, as we mentioned in our How To Build Your Supplement Routine blog this is a great opportunity to inquire about any other nagging issues you're experiencing to see what other supplements can help.

I would like an enzyme formula without probiotics. Do you have anything like that. Otherwise, I have used zen wise and I love the formula. But I need something got a while without probiotics.
Thanks
