How to Build Your Supplement Routine

Establishing a supplement routine is not always a slam dunk. It takes research, follow-through, time, and consistency.

At this point, we’re guessing that you’ve determined you need supplemental support for various reasons, including gaps in your diet (i.e., Omega 3) or health issues (i.e., gut health).

Then you took the next step: researching ingredients from reputable sources. Right? Good job!

Next up, you checked in with your doctor to double-check that these natural options will interact well with existing medications. Got the green light?  You’re crushing it!

OK, now you’re all teed up for supplement success. Well, almost. Sometimes we have remaining concerns about our new daily protocol. Plus, most of us could use some advice about consistency.

That’s why we’re going to share four steps to help you ace your new supplement regime and get the results you truly want.

  1. Do The Research
TikTok is great for spreading information and experiences, hello #healthtok. But that influencer telling you the latest new supplement changed their life likely has no idea if there is any science to back up their claims. Whether you have some concerns, are looking for some gains, or are preparing for a big change like pregnancy, we cannot stress enough the importance of doing your own research. And, by research, we mean credible sources (we’re looking at you TikTok).

  2. Got questions? Read the fine print
Wondering when to take your supplement? Or if you should take it with a meal? Put on your readers and study the label, which likely has many of the answers. Be sure to take the supplement as directed. Certain supplements warrant extra caution, and “natural” doesn’t always mean safe. Also, consider your circumstances. Are you pregnant? Older?

  3. Consider caffeine
Dietitians advise us to stick with plain water when gulping down our daily supplements. Any beverage or food containing caffeine, such as coffee, tea, chocolate, and some sodas, can inhibit the absorption of vitamins and minerals and increase their secretion from the body.

  4. Stay consistent
You know those newly purchased supplements that are so full of promise? They won’t do any good if they remain in the bottle! Commit to taking your supplements regularly and set reminders on your smartphone to ensure you never miss a beat. And stick your supplements in your line of sight for a daily reminder. To avoid damaging your vitamin, keep them out of direct sunlight or humid areas such as the bathroom. As always, keep your supplements out of the reach of little ones.

  5. Don’t get impatient
It’s important to remember that in many cases, results happen gradually – even when you’re being consistent. So, don’t throw in the towel if you’re not noticing improvements after a few weeks. Keep at it! The longer you go, the better you’ll feel.
