Your Gut-Friendly Fall Grocery List

Fall has a way of bringing us back to routine.

Summer trips wind down. Schedules fill back up. The kitchen starts feeling a little more inviting again and suddenly, a Sunday grocery run feels like the beginning of getting your life together.

So while you're stocking up for cozy dinners, packed lunches, and busy fall mornings, why not give your gut a little love along the way?

Supporting your gut doesn't require filling your cart with foods you've never heard of. Many everyday fall staples provide fiber, prebiotics, healthy fats, antioxidants, vitamins, and other nutrients that support digestion, and can benefit the rest of your body, too.

Here's what we're adding to the cart this season.

Fiber + Prebiotics

Add to your cart:

  • Apples

  • Pears

  • Oats

  • Sweet potatoes

  • Onions

  • Garlic

  • Beans and lentils

Fiber does more than help keep things moving.

Certain types of fiber act as prebiotics, providing fuel for beneficial bacteria already living in your gut. A diverse, well-fed gut microbiome helps support digestive health, regularity, and overall wellness.

And fall makes getting more fiber surprisingly easy.

Add sliced apples to oatmeal. Roast sweet potatoes for the week. Toss onions and garlic into soups, sauces, and sheet-pan dinners. Add beans or lentils to chili.

Fall favorite: Apples

Don't peel them too quickly. Much of an apple's fiber and beneficial plant compounds are found in or near the skin. Apples also contain pectin, a type of soluble fiber that can help nourish beneficial gut bacteria.

One apple in your bag = one very easy gut-friendly snack.

Fermented Foods

Add to your cart:

  • Greek yogurt

  • Kefir

  • Sauerkraut

  • Kimchi

  • Other fermented vegetables

Your grocery store's refrigerated section can be a great place to add a little more microbial variety to your routine.

Fermented foods are produced with the help of microorganisms, and some contain live cultures that can complement a gut-friendly diet.

Greek yogurt also brings protein to the table, making it an easy addition to breakfast or an afternoon snack.

Try yogurt with berries and chia seeds, kefir blended into a smoothie, or a spoonful of sauerkraut alongside your favorite fall lunch.

Shopping tip: Not every fermented product contains live cultures by the time it reaches your cart. Check the label if live cultures are what you're looking for.

Seasonal Produce

Add to your cart:

  • Pumpkin

  • Butternut squash

  • Acorn squash

  • Brussels sprouts

  • Carrots

  • Leafy greens

  • Apples

  • Pears

This is where fall really shows off.

Seasonal produce provides a mix of fiber, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and colorful plant compounds, and variety matters.

Pumpkin, squash, and carrots are rich in beta-carotene, which the body can convert into vitamin A. Vitamin A plays a role in normal immune function and maintaining healthy skin and tissues.

Brussels sprouts and leafy greens bring fiber and an assortment of micronutrients and plant compounds to the table.

Because many of these foods are perfect for roasting, soups, and sheet-pan meals, they're easy to work into a fall routine without overthinking it.

A simple rule: Look at your cart. The more natural color you see, the more variety of plant nutrients you're likely bringing home.

Healthy Fats

Add to your cart:

  • Avocados

  • Walnuts

  • Chia seeds

  • Flaxseed

  • Olive oil

  • Salmon

Fat deserves a spot in a balanced diet.

Healthy fats help your body absorb certain fat-soluble vitamins, while foods like walnuts, chia seeds, flaxseed, and salmon can provide omega-3 fatty acids.

Avocados bring something else we love: fiber + healthy fats in one food.

Healthy dietary fats also play important roles throughout the body, including supporting normal cell function and healthy skin.

Drizzle olive oil over roasted vegetables. Sprinkle chia or ground flax into oatmeal. Add avocado to your lunch. Plan salmon for an easy weeknight dinner.

Small additions count.

Easy Proteins

Add to your cart:

  • Eggs

  • Chicken

  • Salmon

  • Greek yogurt

  • Beans

  • Lentils

  • Tofu

Protein isn't only about hitting a number for the day.

Your body breaks dietary protein down into amino acids, which it uses throughout the body to build and maintain tissues and produce important proteins, including collagen. Collagen helps provide structure and support to your skin, bones, joints, and connective tissues throughout the body.

Pairing protein with fiber-rich plants and healthy fats can also help you build more balanced, satisfying meals.

Here are some of our favorite pairings:

Eggs + avocado + whole-grain toast

Salmon + roasted Brussels sprouts + sweet potato

Greek yogurt + berries + walnuts

Lentil soup + leafy greens

Nothing complicated. Just meals that bring more to the table.

Don't Skip the Vitamin C

Fall may make you think apples and pumpkins, but there's another section of the produce aisle worth visiting.

Add to your cart:

  • Berries

  • Oranges

  • Grapefruit

  • Kiwi

  • Bell peppers

  • Broccoli

Vitamin C is an antioxidant and plays an important role in the body's natural production of collagen.

Pair vitamin C-rich produce with protein, fiber, and healthy fats throughout your week for meals that support more than one wellness goal at a time.

Because what nourishes your gut doesn't exist in a vacuum.

Your body is connected and what you put on your plate can provide nutrients that support everything from digestion to healthy skin and everyday wellness.

Build Your Cart, Not a Perfect Diet

Don’t overthink it. You don't need every food on this list.

You don't need to suddenly eat sauerkraut at breakfast or make your own kefir.

And you definitely don't need a picture-perfect grocery cart.

Start with foods you already enjoy and look for opportunities to add a little more variety.

Maybe that's swapping one snack for an apple and walnuts.

Adding chia seeds to your morning oatmeal.

Roasting an extra vegetable with dinner.

Keeping Greek yogurt and berries around for busy afternoons.

Gut-friendly habits are often the ones simple enough to repeat.

Don't Forget Your Gut Support

A well-stocked kitchen is a great place to start, but even a nutrient-packed meal still has to be broken down before your body can use what's on your plate.

That's where digestive enzymes come in.

Your body naturally produces enzymes that help break down carbohydrates, proteins, fats, lactose, and other components of food. But, enzyme production can change as we age, and larger, richer, or more complex meals can sometimes leave your digestive system with more to break down.

That's where a little extra support around mealtime can come in.

Zenwise® Digestive Enzymes with Pre & Probiotics combines 10 digestive enzymes, prebiotics, and 10 clinically studied probiotic strains to help support the breakdown of a wide variety of foods and support healthy digestion.* Take 2 capsules just before eating so they're there when your meal arrives.

For digestive support you can keep close wherever the season takes you, Zenwise® Digestive Enzyme Mints offer 10 digestive enzymes in an easy, travel-friendly mint. Chew 2 mints immediately before or up to 30 minutes before your meal to help support digestion on the go.*

And if getting more fiber is on your fall grocery list, Metabolism + Gut makes it easy to add 6 grams of prebiotic fiber plus 2 billion CFU of probiotics to your daily routine; helping support gut health from another angle.*

Your Fall Grocery List, Simplified

If you remember one thing on your next grocery run, make it this:

Think variety, not perfection.

A fiber-rich apple here. A handful of walnuts there. Some roasted squash with dinner. Salmon one night. Yogurt and berries the next morning.

Those everyday choices add up.

Because nourishing your body from within doesn't have to mean completely changing how you eat.

Sometimes, it simply means giving your cart, and your gut, a little more variety this fall.
