We’ve all been there: you’re at a beautiful dinner, the pasta looks divine, and the wine is flowing. But halfway through the main course, you feel it—that familiar, uncomfortable tightening of your waistband. You silently curse your decision to wear "real pants" instead of leggings, and suddenly, the menu anxiety kicks in. Can you finish the meal, or will you spend the rest of the night feeling like you swallowed a balloon?
If you’ve found yourself searching for relief from occasional gas, bloating, and irregularity, you’ve likely encountered two heavy hitters in the supplement world: digestive enzymes and probiotics. But as you stand in the supplement aisle (or scroll through our site), you might find yourself wondering: do I have to pick a side? Can you take a probiotic and a digestive enzyme together, or will they cancel each other out like a bad middle-school science experiment?
The short answer is a resounding yes. In fact, taking them together is often the "secret sauce" for achieving true food freedom. In this post, we’re going to dive deep into why these two are the ultimate gut health power couple, how they work in different parts of your digestive tract, and how you can use them to stop worrying about your gut and start enjoying your life. At Zenwise®, we believe that The Key To Good Health Is Gut Health.®, and our mission is to help you get back to the table with confidence. Because with the right support, you can follow our favorite mantra: Zenwise. Then Eat.®
To understand why taking these two together is so effective, it helps to use a little analogy. Think of your digestive system as a high-tech computer system designed to extract energy from fuel.
Digestive enzymes are the "hardware" or the "demolition crew" of your gut. These are specialized proteins that physically break down the food you eat into smaller, absorbable pieces. Without them, that steak or that sourdough bread just sits there, largely intact, causing a traffic jam in your intestines. Your body naturally produces these in your saliva, stomach, and pancreas, but as we age, or when we eat particularly complex meals, our natural production might not keep up with the demand.
When you take Digestive Enzymes, you’re essentially giving your body a specialized toolkit to dismantle fats, proteins, carbohydrates, and fiber before they have a chance to cause trouble.
Probiotics, on the other hand, are the "software" or the "site managers." These are live, beneficial bacteria that reside mostly in your large intestine (the colon). Their job isn't to physically break down the sandwich you just ate, but to maintain the environment. They keep the "bad" bacteria in check, support your immune system, and help with the final stages of waste management.
Our Women’s Probiotics, for example, go a step further by supporting not just gut flora, but also vaginal and urinary tract health. When your "software" is running smoothly, your entire system feels more balanced.
The most common misconception is that these two supplements compete with each other. In reality, they operate on different timelines and often in different locations.
Enzymes start working the moment they hit your stomach and continue through the small intestine, where the bulk of nutrient absorption happens. Probiotics are more about the long game, colonizing the lower digestive tract to ensure a healthy microbiome over time.
Taking them together creates a comprehensive approach to digestive wellness. The enzymes clear the path by breaking down food efficiently, which actually makes life easier for your probiotics. When food is properly digested in the small intestine, there’s less undigested "junk" reaching the large intestine to ferment and cause gas.
If you’re looking for a comprehensive daily routine, our Digestive Enzymes are actually a 3-in-1 solution. They contain a broad spectrum of enzymes, prebiotics (food for the good bugs), and a clinically studied probiotic called DE111®. This ensures you’re hitting the problem from every angle without having to juggle ten different bottles.
Let's get a little nerdy for a second. Why does this combination actually result in "The Proof Is In The Poop™"?
Most of the food we eat consists of "polymers"—large, complex molecules. To get the nutrients out, these must be broken down into "monomers."
One of the biggest hurdles for probiotics is surviving the harsh, acidic environment of the stomach. Many "cheap" probiotics die before they ever reach your intestines. This is why we use DE111®, a spore-forming probiotic. Unlike delicate strains, DE111® is built like a tiny tank; it remains dormant in the stomach and only "awakens" once it reaches the safe haven of your gut. When you pair this with enzymes, you’re providing the probiotic with an environment that is already being managed and cleared of digestive debris.
Sometimes you need help right now. For those moments—the pizza parties, the holiday feasts, or the "I probably shouldn't have eaten that" realization—we created No Bloat Capsules. This formula combines enzymes with botanicals like Fennel, Ginger, and Dandelion Root to ease discomfort within hours. While your daily probiotic is building your "gut fortress" over weeks and months, NO BLØAT® acts as the immediate crisis management team.
We know that life doesn't happen in a clinical lab. It happens at brunch, on airplanes, and during busy work weeks. Here is how you can integrate these solutions into your actual life.
You’re at an Italian restaurant. The carbonara is calling your name, but you know that heavy cream and refined carbs usually lead to you feeling like a stuffed turkey.
If you find that your bathroom schedule is more of a suggestion than a rule, you need consistency.
Women’s bodies have unique needs, especially when it comes to the delicate balance of flora in the gut and the urogenital tract.
Maybe you ate a bit too fast at your desk, and now your stomach is doing somersaults.
If there’s one thing we want you to take away from this, it’s that your gut microbiome is like a garden. You can’t just water it once and expect a prize-winning rose bush. You have to tend to it daily.
This is particularly true for probiotics. Because these are live organisms, they need a steady environment to thrive. When you take a probiotic one day and then forget for four days, you’re constantly resetting the clock. The same goes for enzymes; if you only support your digestion once a week, the other six days are spent digging yourself out of a "digestive hole."
This is why we’ve made our Subscribe & Save model so aggressive. When you subscribe to your favorite Zenwise Health products, you get 15% off, but more importantly, you get the peace of mind that your routine won't be interrupted. Most of our core products fall in the $19–$25 range, making it an affordable way to invest in your long-term comfort.
We don’t believe in "clean eating" if it means you’re miserable and restricted. We believe in Food Freedom. We want you to be able to go to the state fair and eat the fried dough. We want you to enjoy the cheese plate at your best friend’s wedding.
Our philosophy is simple: Zenwise. Then Eat.®. By preparing your gut with the tools it needs—both the "demolition crew" (enzymes) and the "site managers" (probiotics)—you remove the friction from eating. You stop worrying about where the nearest bathroom is and start focusing on the conversation across the table.
Gut health doesn't have to be a clinical, sterile topic discussed in hushed tones. It’s about how you feel in your clothes, how much energy you have in the afternoon, and yes, it’s about having a satisfying, regular "The Proof Is In The Poop™" moment.
While we are incredibly proud of our formulas, we also know that supplements work best when paired with a gut-friendly lifestyle. Here are a few quick tips to maximize the efficacy of your Zenwise® routine:
In a market flooded with "miracle cures" and overpriced clinical interventions, we stand for empathetic expertise. We know that digestive issues can be embarrassing. We know that "gas" and "poop" aren't exactly dinner party conversation (unless you're at our office). But we also know that these things shouldn't hold you back from living your life.

Yes! You can take them during the same meal. Digestive enzymes should generally be taken right before you eat to help break down the food as it enters your system. Probiotics can be taken at the same time or separately. Because our Digestive Enzymes already include the spore-forming probiotic DE111®, many people find it easiest to just take one capsule that does it all.
This is a common concern, but the answer is no. Probiotics are live organisms (bacteria or yeast), and they have their own protective mechanisms. Specifically, spore-forming probiotics like the ones we use are incredibly resilient. Furthermore, enzymes are designed to target specific bonds in food (like the bonds in proteins or carbs), not the complex structures of beneficial bacteria.
Enzymes usually provide a "real-time" benefit. If you take No Bloat Capsules with a heavy meal, you should feel the difference in how you digest that specific meal within hours. Probiotics, however, take time to colonize and shift the balance of your microbiome. Most people notice a significant improvement in regularity and overall comfort after 2 to 4 weeks of consistent daily use.
Both enzymes and probiotics are generally very well tolerated. When you first start a probiotic, some people experience a very slight, temporary increase in gas as the microbiome "rebalances." This is actually a sign that the "good guys" are moving in! Starting with a consistent daily routine and staying hydrated will help minimize any adjustment period.
